Pocket Sprung Divan Beds

We seek the maximum degree of comfort at night when we lie down to sleep, and pocket sprung divan beds can give us that. However, it was not always so. The name "mattress" comes from an Arab word, meaning to "throw down," as in medieval times they threw cushions and other soft material down on the floor in order to make a kind of makeshift bed. Later, we came up with the idea of a dedicated device containing soft materials for sleeping on. We called it a mattress.

For a long time mattresses were filled with wool at best, and straw and hay more usually. They were not very comfortable by modern standards, but generations of people slept in this way. They had to really, as most people had little other option. The rich could have the softest materials, such a feathers, to pack their mattresses, but the poor had to make do with whatever they could find. However, they lived, raised families and eventually died in much the same manner as we do. Today, we have one secret weapon that they never even imagined in their wildest dreams: pocket sprung divan beds.

Pocket sprung divan beds have their origins with James Marshall in the year 1900. Marshall was born in England, but he settled in Canada. He was a machinist engineer, and he came up with the idea of encasing individual coils of spring in their own pockets so that they could act independently of each other. The concept was originally known as Marshall coils, after its inventor.

The spring coils were each sewn into individual pockets and pre-compressed a little. The pocketed coils were then fitted together in a prearranged manner, upholstering and padding was added, and the finished product was little different to the modern mattress of today. Marshall's mattresses were a very new concept. The springs acted independently of each other, which had the effect of creating a kind of contour of the sleeper. This also tended to prevent a roll together effect when two sleepers shared a bed, and there was noticeably less roll off effect as well.

Conclusion

Pocket sprung divan beds are among the most comfortable kind of beds to sleeps on. The mattress contours into the body shape of the sleeper. It relieves pressure on the body as well, and provides a definite uplifting effect too. Pocket sprung divan beds also have a foam layer between the springs and the cover of the mattress that helps to provide even more comfort.
